To help those affected most by the economy have a happy Thanksgiving and a merry Christmas, WFGR-FM in Grand Rapids, Mich., participated in several events, including the Second Harvest Gleanerís Food Bank Radiothon and the stationís own "Hope for the Holidays" program. The radiothon supports more than 1,200 organizations in west Michigan that feed the hungry. During the stationís 12-hour live broadcast, listeners gave more than $12,000, putting food on the tables of those needing it most. In conjunction with the radiothon, WFGR broadcast pre-event announcements and conducted interviews with representatives from Second Harvest Gleaners. During the stationís "Hope for the Holidays" program, WFGR arranged for five families to receive $100 in groceries and additional resources for holiday decorations so they could enjoy a traditional holiday dinner. The station also organized a drive to provide veterans in the area with items for the holiday season, and within a few short hours, listeners had filled a storage unit to the brim with donations for the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans.
