WWJ-AM Southfield, Michigan Wins 2014 NAB Crystal Radio Award (WWJ-AM)

Topic: Community-Focused Initiatives

For more than 94 years, CBS Radio’s WWJ-AM Southfield, Mich. has been a thread that ties metropolitan Detroit’s diverse community together, telling their stories, sharing their challenges, celebrating their accomplishments while mourning their losses. In that light, WWJ-AM’s efforts to promote and encourage community service made the station a recipient of a 2014 Crystal Radio Award. In 2013, the station not only ran daily on-air PSA, but developed special programming featuring local “difference-makers” and charitable organizations. In 2013, WWJ-AM raised money for numerous causes including more than $655,000 in matching donations during its annual Radiothon for The Heat and Warmth Fund, helping thousands of less fortunate families heat their homes. The enthusiasm for philanthropy was alive and thriving with the station’s staff, clients and listeners who donated hundreds of hours of free time to help feed the hungry, rescue animals, raise money to cure disease, help kids and more.
