In 2013, independently-owned WLEN-FM Adrian, Mich. responded to local community needs including homelessness, hunger and unemployment, earning it a 2014 NAB Crystal Radio Award. While its Michigan community suffered high unemployment and record home foreclosures, WLEN-FM broadened its reach as a community resource, promoted a strong education foundation and helped to build county-wide collaboration. The station’s efforts helped raise more than $2 million in community giving. WLEN-FM sponsored “Hometown Hope,” and each month designed and donated a $3,500 marketing grant to a different local nonprofit organization. The station organized fundraising events and assisted others with their events. WLEN-FM’s staff of 17 donated more than 1,000 volunteer hours. Additionally, it broadcast more than 54,000 PSAs and generated more than 400 hours of community affairs programming.
