Graham Media Groupís NBC affiliate WDIV-TV Detroitís investigative unit, including reporter Kevin Dietz, went undercover for a four-part series on homelessness. They exposed the dangers people face while living on the streets and spent several days with parents who gave up their children due to addiction or joblessness. He also talked to a former nun who makes sandwiches for the hungry. Every day, shelters in Detroit turn away 3,000 people. In the report, Dietz noted that people who are uncomfortable giving money can give granola bars, water bottles, or clean clothes. Several homeless people expressed a desire for a central location to become sober, acquire clothing and learn job skills. Following the report, tens of thousands of dollars and truck loads of clothes and blankets were donated to local organizations.
